For Edmonton artist Leah Gravells, there is constant inspiration to be found by simply looking up. Turbulent storm clouds gather in the sky, dark and foreboding, before breaking to reveal the most brilliant blues in their wake. In the moments just before the sun rises, there is just a sprinkle of gold along the horizon, the promise of a new day in the darkness.
Generations of artists have been captivated by the Alberta landscape and vast open skies. Leah’s work presents a new perspective; unique quilted landscapes created with hundreds of horizontal strips of fabric. Leah cuts batik fabrics into ¾ inch strips, which are ultimately reduced to ¼ inch rows after being stitched together. Each piece requires hundreds of strips, patiently arranged and sewn to build a landscape.
Leah’s landscapes are carefully planned, with colours arranged and rearranged until the composition vibrates with a feeling of honesty. Gradients of colour cascade into one another, with specific fabrics carefully chosen for the moments of transition, taking the scene from horizon to sky.
The Sky’s the Limit captures the look and feel of Alberta’s ever-changing sky, giving scope for the imagination and space to feel at home.
