Within Grid Makers, figures weave, knit and breathe new worlds into being. They unmake themselves and their surroundings, remaking it into something new. Grids grow and expand across each scene, some floating like balloons, others spilling across the floor.
In this surreal world, it often becomes difficult to separate the figures from their work from their surroundings. They merge and layer, squeezing our perceptions, challenging the assumption that there are divisions between maker and creation.
Amongst weavers, grids are a ground for knowledge. Patterns are transcribed into grids, a language for creation carefully nestled within vertical and horizontal lines. With a loom and thread, a weaver can bring forth this pattern, their hands transcribing an idea into a tangible object.
The figures themselves act as characters in a play unfolding across many stages. They are stand ins, archetypes of makers. Some may be experienced makers with a protégé, freely sharing knowledge and skills. Others may be protective of their craft, shielding their patterns and techniques from the eyes of those they deem unworthy.
They are deeply human stories, governed by impulses that are familiar to all. Grid Makers speaks to a community, a collective of individuals who hold, teach, keep and create with a shared purpose.
