Exploring Francophone History Tour
Division: I + II + III + IV

Duration: 0.5–1.5 Hours
Activity/Products:
- Students explore the history of the St. Albert community as it centers around francophone settlers and Mission Park. Students will learn about a local heritage site, such as Father Lacombe Chapel and the Little White School (two room schoolhouse). Students should be dressed appropriately for the weather to participate in the Mission Park Walking Tour.
Volunteers: 2–4 recommended
- Grade 1: People can learn about one another by sharing information about cultures, traditions, and histories (origins).
- A community can be made up of diverse cultures.
- Learning about cultures can build appreciation of diverse communities (intercultural understanding).
- Describe expressions of culture in a Francophone community.
- Recognize landmarks in the local community.
- Grade 2: Students relate traditions to Canada’s heritage.
- Relate history and language to Francophone heritage.
- Grade 3: Students relate diversity to Alberta’s western identity.
- The Francophone population in Alberta originated from the immigration of Francophone Roman Catholic missionaries to the land now known as Alberta.
- French was the first European language spoken in Alberta.
- The Francophone population in Alberta has increased and diversified to include French speakers from many parts of the world.
- Grade 4: Colonists brought belief systems and ways of organizing society to the colonies, including • religions • leadership • education • health care
- Grade 6: The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms recognizes French and English as official languages of Canada.
- Francophones and Anglophones in minority settings have collective language education rights (Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms).
- Grade 7: Research stories of western settlement in the Dominion of Canada related to the role and treatment of new immigrants.
- Grade 8: Francophone Radio in Alberta: Students examine civic engagement to understand and influence issues and events.
- Grade 9: The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms (1982) and the Francophone Community.
- Grade 10–12 Social Studies and Francophone Perspectives and Experiences.

The Peru and Indigenous Peoples of Canada program perfectly connected Gr 3 Social Studies content with some Gr 4 Social Studies content. We had lots to talk about after.
